INTERNATIONAL DIALING PREFIX


When making a call out of the country, an international dialing prefix is needed. Phone prefixes tell the phone company where the phone call is heading. While there are some countries which share a prefix, other countries have their own unique international prefix.

In many cases, the international dialing prefix is simply "00". This was set as a standard by the International Telecommunications Union. However, not every country has adopted this method for their own phone prefix system. These countries have special international prefixes.

In many cases, the “00” may be used the majority of the time, but not when calls are made using VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) service. If the country has set up separate phone prefixes in this manner, double check! Depending on whether you are using a traditional landline, a mobile phone through a wireless carrier, or any device using VoIP, you will need to be certain you are using the correct international dialing prefix.

If you use an international callback service, you can save a considerable amount of money on each international call. The callback provider select the carrier with the lowest rate for each call. The international call will then cost far less than when calling direct using your regular carrier.

When calling a phone number in another country, there is always a prefix to dial that indicates you are placing an international call; this prefix varies by country. After the international dialling prefix, you dial the international country code for the country you are calling, followed by the local number. This is a list of those country codes.

The United States, Canada, and several Caribbean nations share the international calling code 1, with each US state or island nation given its own three-digit "area code". The following list includes the area codes for such nations outside the US and Canada.

(Note: Kosovo shares the same calling code 377 with Monaco, 381 with Serbia and 386 with Slovenia)
